We constantly hear stress is bad for us and most of us know stress can make us have sleepless nights, anxiety, chest pain, easily catching someone else’s cold/flu, headaches, making poor dietary choices and the list goes on.

Now this list can truly go on and on but IS STRESS ACTUALLY BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH?

The truth is small amounts of stress is not harmful, in fact it is helpful. Stress can often give you the motivation to get things done, keeps you on track, helps you feel more energised and can get you out of your comfort zone.

The issue is when stress continues for an extended period of time.

So how much stress is too much stress?

This is significantly dependant on personal circumstances, your genetic predisposition to disease and current state of health. There are short term effects and long term effects.

The short term effects are:

  • sleep irregularities
  • nightmares
  • feeling anxious, depressed, isolated, teariness
  • headaches
  • chest pain
  • muscular tension

Overall, stress after a long period of time can impact the normal functioning of cortisol and adrenalin.  This, in turn results in:

  • digestive upsets
  • food allergies and food intolerances
  • hormonal imbalance, irregularities in menstrual cycles
  • infertility
  • thyroid imbalance
  • migraines
  • auto-immune diseases

This is just a snap shot of what can happen. The body is very complex and will show you when it is feeling affected by stress in many ways. The key is to listen and make the necessary changes to your life to alleviate the level of stress you are feeling. It isn’t enough to go to the doctor and get some medicine to feel better and that’s it. You need to ask yourself a few questions first:

  • Where is the stress coming from?
  • Can I change my circumstances?
  • Can I change my perception of what is precipitating the stress?
  • If it is a friendship/relationship/partnership, is this union no longer serving me a purpose?
  • Am I on the right path in my life?
  • Does life give me joy or am I just living day by day?

Stress when experienced for long periods of time will always create a dis-eased state in your body. The beauty of the human body is that it is in constant state of rejuvenation and so a few key changes to your life and your choices can really help you bring your body back to optimal health. It is always important to reflect on these times of stress as they can be instrumental in teaching us new things or redirecting our path towards where we are DESTINED to go instead of where we THINK we must go.

However, if you choose to ignore the signs and symptoms your body shows, they will get louder and more uncomfortable. In some circumstances you may need some professional help from a health practitioner so reach out and get the help you need to live a long and fruitful life in all aspects life has to offer.
